Inside the undertaker business in ghost town Bodie, in Bodie State Historic Park, CA USA

A preserved ghost town and a State Historic Park since 1962, Bodie once boasted a population of 10,000 people, 65 saloons and innumerable brothels, gambling halls and opium dens during a gold rush in 1880. The town was founded by Waterman S. Body (William Bodey), who had discovered small amounts of gold in hills north of Mono Lake, but it wasn’t until 1877, when the Standard Company struck pay dirt and Bodie quickly became a boomtown. Today, only a small section of the town survives. Interiors remain as they were left and stocked with goods. Archaeologists work with architects to record the buildings with photographs and measured drawings for necessary stabilization with as little change to the design as possible, a testament to the care with which Bodie State Historic Park has been preserved.
