Tulips commonly mean perfect love, owing to Turkish and Persian legends about the love between Farhad and Shirin. In one version of the story, Farhad, who was a prince, fell in love with a beautiful girl named Shirin. Shirin was murdered and in despair Farhad rode his horse off a cliff. Where his blood touched the ground, a red tulip grew. The name Tulip comes from the Persian word for turban, because in full bloom tulips have a turban-like shape.
