St Ola (IV), IMO 7109609, Stromness, Orkney. Photographed 1997 when loading at Stromness. She was then owned by P&O and working as Orkney’s roll on/roll off ferry on the Scrabster - Stromness route. There have been 4 vessels called St Ola on this route. St Ola (IV), pictured, was older but larger than her predecessor. Built in Germany and bought secondhand from Scandinavia, she was in service from 1993 to 2002. After which she was sold on and continued to work as a vehicle and passenger ferry in Estonia circa 2015, and from 2017 she was sailing out of Naples, Italy. Hamnavoe, the bay of Stromness, is a fine deep anchorage sheltered from all but a south east gale. It developed as a fishing port with boatyards. Tourism has probably taken over as the main industry. Red boat on left is Girl Mina, once a trawler, working as a Dive Boat 1997, scrapped and broken up 2007. The dark blue boat on the right is the MV Sharon Rose, Scapa Flow Diving Charters, also once a trawler repurposed, and still working 2018.
