Virginia Dare, First American Settler Baby

An artist's fanciful imagining of Virginia Dare. Viriginia Dare was the first baby born to English settlers in Roanoke, in 1587. The settlement at Roanoke disappeared after two years and no one knows what became of the colonists. Some believe they went "native" to survive. This depiction of Virginia reflects that, dressed as she is in Native American-inspired clothing, with teepees and Native Americans in the background. Some legends have her turning into a white doe, eventually shot by a returning Englishman. She has become an enduring character in American folklore.
