China: 'Approach to Yarkand, Xinjiang'. Illustration by Robert B. Shaw (19th century), 1868. Yarkand in Xinjiang is one of the major cities of the southern Tarim Basin region and has long been associated with Uighur nationalism and separatism. It shares these values with Kashgar and Khotan, but is gradually becoming a more Han Chinese city. This image dates from Robert Shaw's visit in 1868. The gallows can be seen behind the wall to the right of the city gate.
