In a short time Louis wascompelled to sue for peace and quit thekingdom. Pembroke was appointed Regent, andthe first act of the new reign was to confirmMagna Charta, its sixty-one chapters having been reduced toforty-two. Parliament began to consider it as the funda-mental law of the nation, and its observance as the conditionof their grants. Pembroke having died in the third yearof his regency, the power was divided between Hubert deBurgh and Peter de Roches,
