The Russian orthodox Church of St Nicholas the Miracle-Maker is commonly known as the Russian Church and is one of the most distinctive and decorative buildings in Sofia. It was built on the site of the Saray Mosque as the official church of the Russian Embassy. The story is that a Russian Diplomat, Semontovski-Kurilo, did not want to worship in a heretical church and ordered a church in the Russian style. Saint Nicholas was the patron saint of the Russian Tsar of the time, Nicholas 11. The church was designed by the Russian architect Mikhail Preobrazhenski in the Russian Revival Style, with decoration inspired by the Muscovite Russian churches of the 17th century. The five domes are coated with gold. The bells were donated by Emperor Nicholas II. Construction began in 1907 and the church was finally concentrated in 1914.
