We were encamped upon a spot coveredwith vivid vegetation in a tiny ravine ; on eitherside were steep rocks of brightest orange colour,being covered with brilliant lichen. At eitherend the ravine was crowned by summer point, ledge, and cleft of the rocks aroundus was occupied by sea-birds, gulls, puffins, razor-bills, guillemots which rose at our apparition,with wild cries circled around, and then settledagain to watch the intruders. During the nightthere had been inexplicable croakings in our tent;these were now explained by the appearance ofsome puffins hopping in a bewildered mannerfrom the tent, which was pitched over theirburrows. Breakfast was the next thing, and while pre-paring we may think over the history of theisle. Very little can be gathered from maps andbooks;
