U Rathaus Schöneberg, Berlin. U-bahn underground railway station serves the U4 line. It has an unusual bridge-like structure and is a listed building. The U4 line runs from Nollendorfplatz to Innsbrucker Platz and the station was built between 1908 and 1910 and when it opened on October 1, 1910 it was called Stadtpark . The architect was Johann Emil Schaudt, It was given its current name on May 15, 1951. The station was built in a valley basin and the Schöneberg city park was laid out at the same time. The station was designed as a bridge-like, above-ground structure and the underground station has windows on both sides through which one can look into the park. This combination of underground and open station is rare . A street was laid out above the train station and this is for use by pedestrians and bicycles The station was lined with blue-green tiles and this together with the typography used on the signs, showed the influence of Art Nouveau. During WW2 the station was damaged in 1940 by Allied air raids and completely destroyed in 1945. By 1951 it had been rebuilt but the interior was painted beige and the lobby of the station was redesigned. In 1973, the entrances to the station were demolished and replaced by steel fencing with a roof. The station was renovated in 2002. The entrance area was newly built and at southern end of the platform, a small staircase was created as an additional emergency exit. The station is a listed building.
