Epithelioma is a chronic, progressive, malignant newgrowth in the skin or mucous membrane, which is char-acterized by the formation of ulcers with raised, hard waxyedges, and by a strong tendency to return after apparentremoval by knife or caustic, Symptoms. Itmay occur upon the skin alone, or upon the mucous mem-brane alone, or upon both the skin and mucous membraneat their line of juncture. Epitheliomas occurring upon thetongue, larynx, or uterus do not concern us here, as theybelong to the domain of surgery. The starting-point of the 208 DISEASES OF THE SKIN. disease may be a crack or an abraded scaly spot, as on thelip; a small, flat, scaly, sebaceous patch; a white, pearlylooking, hard nodule ; a senile or other wart or papilloma;a pigmentary mole ; a cicatrix ; an adenoma; a chronic orlupous ulcer; a psoriatic patch, or some other new growth inthe skin.
