At a very early date, they appear to have beennumerous and powerful. In the year 390, B. C, they invaded Romeunder Brennus, and took that city, but were expelled by Camillus. 2. Under another Brennus, they invaded Greece, as I have told the time of Julius Caesar, the Gauls had made some little progresstowards civilization ; but they were still a barbarous people, and re-tained many practices that belong only to savages.
