Grave marker of one of 43 casualties of the Great War & WW2 buried on the Cliveden Estate, UK - all grave markers shown in this sequence


The British Red Cross was offered land in the Cliveden Estate by the owners the Astors on which to build a hospital for Great War injured soldiers. The Canadian Govt took up the offer & built a hospital on the Taplow tennis courts & named initially the the 'Duchess of Connaught Red Cross Hospital'. Over 24,000 soldiers were treated, The Italianate Garden became the cemetery. Of the burials of the Great War 28 are Canadian and 2 American with British, Australian & New Zealanders. Nursing Sisters from the hospital are also interred there. There are 2 WW2 graves.
