Caption: Ser'xu, Sichuan, China - Aug 2002. A young Khampa girl waiting to go on parade at the Ser'xu Horseracing Festival in Eastern Tibet. The most important event of the year, the horseracing festivals are also the fashion parade, with all ages dressing up in their finest jewles and atire. The Khampas still wear their wealth, including turquoise, amber, red coral and gold teeth, as they did in tribal days when threats from maurading warriors required a quick getaway. Although today, due to outside economics and poaching, much of their jewlery is plastic, as pictured.
