Where shelling is good two men, or one man and aboy. can gather nearly a ton of >hells in half a day, witha boat containing a strong engine. Some boats are rather short for this work and a boomis placed on the bow of the boat. An old wagon tonguecosts twenty-five cents and answers for this purpose verynicely. The heaw end of the tongue is bolted to heavytimbers at the bow of the boat and the rope is attachedto the pole cap iron at the end of the tongue. The operation of the dip net is easy to learn and aftera little practice, amateurs become very successful in theiruse of it. CHAPTER Methods of Pearl Fishing. THE appliances and methods which have been de-scribed in the preceding chapters can be used inrather deep water, but the implements andmethods described here can only be used in the moreshallow waters. They might properly be classified asshoal fishing appliances and methods. One of the most important tools for use in pearl hunt-ing in shallow water is the shell tongs. The most ap-proved style are the Coke Fork Tongs, which are madefrom two coke forks. The points of the tines are cutoff a few inches from the ends, and the forks are ironedand riveted together something like scissors are joined, and they are mounted on poles of any length desired.
