Die Westerplatte bei Danzig ist eine bewaldete Halbinsel an der Ostseekueste. Bekannt wurde sie durch den Beschuss des polnischen Munitionslagers am 1. September 1939, der Beginn des Zweiten Weltkrieges. An die polnischen Verteidiger erinnert das 1966 eingeweihte Westerplatte-Denkmal. Das 23 Meter hohe Monument entstand aus 236 Granitbloecken. Es wurde von Franciszek Duszenko, Adam Haupt und Henryk Kitowski entworfen, Danzig, Pomorskie, Pommern, Polen, Europa | The Westerplatte near Gdansk is a wooded peninsula on the Baltic coast.
