Each of these can be controvertedby the simple fact that they do not apply to the majority ofcases. Damsch offers a toxin theory. Ord advances a theorythat the disease is due to a lesion in the trophic centers of thecord. A further study of this disease, however, shows thatthe anatomical changes are identical with the normal senilejoint changes, but they proceed faster and are carried furtherthan in senile arthrosclerosis. The disease begins in the jointsthat have been most actively employed, generally the hands, followed by the ankles and feet, then the knees, wrists, elbows, shoulders, cervical spine, hips and lastly the dorsal flexor muscles, which are the ones that are the most. From these facts it would seem that the disease isbut an early and exaggerated senile process. The pains aredue to degeneration of the nerve terminals in the affectedtissues. The exciting causes are unknown. Every conceivabledeparture from a natural mode of life—the excessive use ofamylaceous and saccharine food, exposure, exhaustion, sexualexcesses, unhygienic surroundings, rapid temperature changes, etc., have been cited as possible exciting causes.
