This gilded equestrian statue of Joan of Arc stands in the Place des Pyramide, a small square at a busy crossroads on the Rue de Rivoli in Paris. It was commissioned by Napoleon III in 1874 and created by the sculptor Emmanuel Frémiet. There are copies and replicas of the statue in various places around the world, for instance in Melbourne Australia, Portland Oregon and New Orleans Louisiana. In fact the Parisian statue shown in this image is itself a revised version erected in 1899, the actual original stands in Fairmount Park in Philadelphia.
