Coast Guard Cutter Healy, a 420-foot icebreaker homeported in Seattle, conducts science operations the southern Arctic Ocean Oct. 4, 2015, after becoming the first surface vessel to reach the North Pole unaccompanied on Sept. 5, 2015. Healy is underway in the Arctic Ocean in support of the National Science Foundation-funded Arctic GEOTRACES, part of an international effort to study the distribution of trace elements in the world's oceans.
