I regret that the effort to put througha hunting-license law failed because ofstrong opposition from many politicians seem to be afraid of it,but, at the next session, with the rightkind of force behind it, I believe it can beput through. My observation has beenthat at the past three sessions of theMaryland Legislature failure has beenmainly due, in the matter of up-to-dategame and bird laws, to the lack of theright sort of man at Annapolis. An effortwas made to remove protection from theTurkey Buzzard, but by active work, in which I was aided much by Dr. HenryOldys, I succeeded in having this measureconfined to the town of Easton, wherethe proposition originated. This will, therefore, do little harm. Mutually Satisfactory The accompanying capital photographillustrates admirably the Audubonianway of killing two birds with one stone,. TWO DELIGHTFUL GUESTSPhotographed by Carl E. Purple —a shot from a camera. The parallel, indeed, is double. The photographer fedtwo birds at once, and took their picturesfor his pay, using but a single plate. Thiswas as economical as the result is parties to this amiable arrangementwere perfectly satisfied. The photographergets his credit; the Woodpecker is livingon the fat of the land; and the Nuthatchmay be said to be in clover. The lessonof the picture is as obvious as is its beauty. 324 Bird - Lore NEW MEMBERS AND CONTRIBUTORS Enrolled from March i to July i, 1914.
