Clarissa Clara Harlowe Barton (December 25, 1821 - April 12, 1912) was a self-taught nurse who founded the American Red Cross. During the American Civil War she helped both Union and Confederate soldiers. Barton was an early suffragette, activist for civil rights, and is revered for doing humanitarian work at a time when relatively few women worked outside the home. No photographer credited, 1870s.
