But that is what the theatre-goingSan Franciscan dearly loves, the thinklessshow. During Sotherns engagement, duringthe weeks run of The Wolf, during anyattraction of a strictly legitimate nature, theysport the green curtain. But put on a mu-sical comedy that has, as is the case withThe Red Mill, been a New York success,and out comes the prosperous multitude—theclass that dresses well, buys the latest musicand the last sensational novel, owns its owncar, decorates its wife with diamonds, patron-izes high-priced restaurants, in fact, scattersmoney liberally everywhere except in thechurches, and perhaps some of it does that,too, since, in these liberal-minded later years,the church and the theatre are no longer ir-reconcilable.
