Bariatric surgery. Surgeon applying disinfectant to an obese patient's abdomen prior to surgery. The operation will use endoscopes inserted through holes in the abdomen. This is known as laparoscopic surgery. Examples of such surgery include gastric bypass surgery and gastric band surgery. Bariatrics is the branch of medicine that deals with obesity. Special techniques are used by anaesthetists and surgeons when caring for obese patients. Photographed in a UK hospital in 2014.
