The following notes, descriptive of the appearance, were madeat the time: The main vascular filaments seem to contain blood,apparently not in circulation, while the finer network between thelarger vessels is entirely empty, and looks white as the light isthrown on it. At various points, especially above and in theperiphery, are numerous dilatations or ectasise of the blood vesselsnever seen before. There are also breaks in the columns atseveral points, and it is evident that there is no circulation anylonger in the vascular system, and the whole formation presentsa wholly different appearance from what it ever did before, and isevidently retrograding.
