Uniformed Woman of the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry service in an Austin K2 Ambulance

FANY was founded in 1907 providing care for injured combatants moving between front lines and field hospitals. Their role was soon extended to running field hospitals, providing feeding stations and driving ambulances. At the end of the Great War FANYs had been awarded over 40 decorations for bravery. In WW2 FANYs formed the core of Motor Driver Companies of the Auxilliary Territorial Service - the ATS. FANYs also continued as a distinct service and in 1999 were renamed The Princess Royal's Volunteer Corps after their Commandant in Chief, Anne the Princess Royal. Here a FANY is shown in an Austin K2/Y ambulance built by the Austin Motor Company for use in WW2 (this is one of about 50 surviving vehicles) which could transport 10 walking wounded or 4 stretcher cases. Apart from FANYs subsumed into the ATS the then Princess Elizabeth also drove one of these vehicles as a member of the Auxilliary Territorial Service where she was trained as a driver and mechanic.
