An old engraving of a worker at an English winding engine. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. This type of small Cornish steam-engine was connected to equipment that used a double drum and wire ropes to haul up coal or ore from the mine – one drum could raise while the other lower. Another shaft on the engine (right) could be used to pump out water from underground.
