Young red cabbage (Brassica oleracea) seedlings being protected from slugs and snails with organic approved slug pellets
Young crops are especially vulnerable to being eaten and destroyed by slugs and snails. The use of slug pellets helps to protect them. Organic slug pellets in the image are made of ferric phosphate which is broken down by micro-organisms to iron and phosphate in the soil and this is actually beneficial for plant growth. Birds, hedgehogs and other wildlife that eat slugs and snails will not be harmed by ferric phosphate pellets, unlike with chemical slug pellets. Slug pellets that are not organically approved are based on one of two active ingredients; Metaldehyde or the less common Methiocarb. These are bad for wildlife and the environment. It is also showing up in British drinking water and it can't be extracted. Both look similar with the obvious blue colouring.
