Contractors lifting steel reinforcement cage before inserting into a diaphragm wall excavation prior to filling with concrete.

A diaphragm (or slurry) wall is excavated by using a special trench cutter called a hydromill (or hydrofraise). Once completed, a steel reinforced cage is inserted and the trench is filled with concrete to create retaining walls under the surface. The absence of vibration and shock makes this system very suitable for use on urban sites. This excavation system makes it possible to drill diaphragm wall in a very wide range of ground, from cohesionless soils to hard rock.
