A type R10 radar station was built at Gallan Head near Aird Uig in the mid-1950s to replace the existing manual watching of the North Western Approaches. This stayed in operation until 1964 when it was replaced by a radio surveillance system. During its years of operation about 150 RAF personnel worked at the station as radar operators and technicians, mechanics, electricians, etc as well as the necessary service occupations such as cooks.
