Net-winged midge (Liponeura sp.) larva. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the larva of a net-winged midge, showing a suction cup (dark, round) on the underside of its body. Midge larvae are aquatic, only leaving the water to hatch into adults. Net-winged midges (family Blephariceridae) are found near fast-flowing streams where the larvae live. The larvae use these suction cups to fasten themselves to rocks and other solid objects to avoid being swept away by the current. Magnification: x53, when printed 10 cm wide.
