View SE of the Earl's Palace, Kirkwall, Orkney, Scotland, UK: remains of a Renaissance palace built 1600-07 by forced labour for the notorious Patrick Stewart Earl of Orkney. Vaulted storerooms & kitchen on ground floor with main stiarcase leading to 'state apartments' including the great hall on the first floor. Note the fine oriel windows. Traces of a second floor survive. The Earl's Palace incorporated the Medieval (C12th) Bishop's Palace built around the same time as St Magnus Cathedral. The surrounding sycamore trees were planted around 1840.
