Stretcher for Making Screen Doors By N. Richard It is not true that all unique ways of doing thingsarc found in the large establishments. On the con-trary, some of the simplest, yet most effective methodsof doing things are found in the so-called one-horseplants, in which, as a rule, the majority of the equip-ment is of the home-made variety. While in a small shop recently I observed themmaking screen doors, and noted with what ease theywere able to stretch their wire cloth stiff and that perhaps some reader may be called uponat some time to make screens, I will describe as nearlyas 1 can the device they were using. The roller was slit open in the centre tohold the end of the wire cloth. When a sufficientamount of the cloth was wound on the roll the ratchetwas released and the cloth pulled back and fastenedto the end of the screen frame. When this was donethe ratchet was wound as tight as desired and the wirecloth secured in place all round. After being securedthe cloth was cut, thus completing the job. For quickness and taut stretching of the screen thisdevice had any beat that I have ever seen in operationIf I were to build one myself, however, 1 would soarrange the roll that it could be raised or lowered asdesired. This could be done by cutting a groove inlegs A and B and fastening the roll in same by meansof thumb-screws.
