Illustration of a candidiasis infection on the cervix. Caused by the fungus Candida albicans this infection is also known as thrush (or moniliasis). It most commonly affects the vagina, but also other areas of mucous membrane, such as inside the mouth, or moist skin. Vaginal candidiasis may cause a thick, white, \cottage cheese\" discharge and vaginal irritation. It is sexually transmitted (more common in women) and may spread from the genitals or mouth to other moist areas of the body. Thrush may be stimulated by oral contra- ceptives, diabetes, and antibiotics which destroy the natural bacteria that control it. Treatment is with anti-fungal drugs."
