Unlike his serious war-time images for Harper’s Weekly, the artist felt free to inject humor into these miniature comments on army life which include images of wives and sweethearts and soldiers enjoying themselves on leave. Several Zouaves are depicted, members of Union volunteer regiments whose colorful North-African inspired uniforms were distinguished by baggy trousers, a short jackets and tasseled caps. Homer even caricatured himself in a card titled Our Special. By 1864 the war was entering its final months and formerly sacrosanct subjects could be approached more lightly. View more.
