William Osler as a school prefect, 1860s. Canadian physician William Osler (upper right, 1849-1919) as a prefect in his last years (1886 and 1867) at Trinity College School (then in Weston, Ontario, Canada). He went on to study medicine at McGill University, Montreal, Canada, before becoming the first professor of medicine (1889) at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, USA. In 1905 he became a professor at Oxford University, UK. Considered the father of modern medicine, he founded the practice of student residency in hospitals. His 'Principles and Practice of Medicine' (1892) was a standard textbook for forty years.
