Close-up of a marble votive shrine on the façade of Palazzo Centurione-Gavotti (17th century), a historic palace in the old town of Genoa, Liguria

The historic center of Genoa is dotted with votive shrine called "Madonnette", ancient tabernacles containing devotional images placed on the corners or facades of buildings. The origin of these small masterpieces is ancient and goes back to the twelfth century with the affirmation of the cult of the Madonna and when, in the Middle Ages, every road had to have its own sacred image to which to ask for protection. Palazzo Centurione-Gavotti is a historic palace located in Via San Lorenzo, a few steps from the built in the 17th century and included in the list of Rolli, a group of palaces - most of which also date from the late 16th and early 17th centuries - which were associated to a particular system of ‘public lodging’ in private residences, whereby notable guests on State visit to the Republic were hosted in one of these palaces on behalf of the State.
