Elwell, who built the first framehouse on the prairie on which the town ofPana has been founded—a house which is stillstanding as one of the landmarks of pioneertimes—has been closely associated in helpfulmanner with the upbuilding and progress ofthis portion of Montgomery county. He wasborn May 1, 1832, in Bridgeton, New Jersey,a son of William and Catherine (Miller) El-well. The father was of English lineage, whilethe mother was descended from a family fromnorthern Germany.
