Stephen Lin-coln was a member of the Oakham Congregational church,and was chosen chorister June 17, 1779. He held theoffice of highway surveyor in 1781, 1792, and 1798. He waswarden in 1784, and selectman in 1791 and 1798. He is re-membered as a man of imposing appearance, large and tall,while his wife was small of stature. The portrait of Mr. Lin-coln here given, is from a pencil sketch made a few years. -g LINCOLN GENEALOGY. before his death, by Miss Elizabeth Davis of Boston. It is theonly picture of him extant, and is said to have been an excel-lent likeness. He died in Oakham March i6, 1840, and hiswife died April 8, 1839. They are buried in the cemeteryon the Barre Plains road, about two miles northwesterly fromOakham Center. The following simple inscriptions are to beseen on their gravestones: MRS LYDIAMR STEPHEN WIFE OFLINCOLN STEPHEN LINCOLNDIED . r, DIED MARCH 16 1840 „ „ APRIL 8 1830 ^T 78 It will be observed that Stephen Lincolns age at death asrecorded on the stone is erroneous. He was 89 at the time ofhis death. A fact worth calling attention to is the large num-ber of his grandchildren. There were sixty-five, a large num-ber of them attaining mature years.
