In 1840 an ord-nance depot was established at the fort, of which Captain had chargeuntil 1845, when the stores were removed to St. Louis Arsenal. Froi^i 1845 till theact for establishing the Rock Island Arsenal was passed, in 1862, the Island was incharge of a civil agent or custodian employed by the war department, out of the con-trol of which it never passed. The act of congress locating the National Arsenal on Rock Island was approvedJuly 11th, 1862, and it appropriated for the purpose $100, This was the firstaction of congress looking definitely to the construction of the Arsenal. The towerof this building is supplied with one of the best clocks in the United States. It hasa dial twelve feet in diameter on each of the four sides of the tower, and a strikingbell weighing 3,300 pounds. The dials can be easily read from the cities of Daven-port and Rock Island. General Thomas J.
