Tank in the Shiva Temple, Chidambaram, Madras. Oil on canvas. British school. A tank to which steps lead down from a surrounding colonnade. The scene is painted from the western side of the tank. On the right is the entrance to the Hall of the Thousand Columns; on the left that of the Temple of Parvati; while, across the water, above the walls of the colonnade rises one of the great 'gopuras' (gateways) that stand on each side of the temple. Upon the steps and in the water are figures bathing. The temple, situated in the centre of the town, covers an area of about 39 acres. Inscribed: ' Ward Pinxit'; on frame: 'The Bramins' Bath in Chillimbrum between the walls of the Pagoda. 32 by 49 ins (81 by cms). Originally published in 1769 - 1770.
