Samosir, or Pulau Samosir, is a large volcanic island in Lake Toba. The Batak ethnic group who live on the island build huge distinctive styled houses, with elaborate carvings covering the wooden timbers. There are black and white engravings and painting of scenes of traditional importance on the beams.
