A Century of History Meets Jack Hammer - OL62
The Texas & Pacific Railroad is a 19th Century Railroad. I say "is" because of a bankruptcy that put all their property into a foundation trust that is currently still listed on the NYSE as the railroad foundation slowly sells itself away. The problem is that it is making more money now than ever. before, is still the largest land holder in the State of Texas with 900,000 plus acres still traded on the stock exchange. The KCS/ATSF railroad built a spur to the water facilities at White Rock Lake. That bridge that was part of that spur had become the "official" entry into White Rock Lake Park at Williams Road and W. Lawther Street. This past Saturday, hydrolic jack hammers began to tear it down as the right of way is now part of a hike and bike extension trail connecting to the White Rock Creek Trail, The Santa Fe Trail , the Cottonwood Trail. and of course, the Katy Trail, the original T&P railroad right of way. .It took two days to reduce the north column to rubble and the south column is under demolition currently. As the column was being removed on Friday and Saturday, it occurred to me that not one stick of rebar was seen embedded in that concrete column. It was as solid as granite. These are images of the first of the columns to fall. In May or June, a new steel prefabricated bridge will be added with new landscaping. It will carry the bike and hike over the roadway where the olf T&P became such a landmark.
