Diabetes insipidus. Artwork of the rare metabolic disorder diabetes insipidus. Damage to the pituitary gland (enlarged at upper left), either physically or due to disease, may halt the release of antidiuretic hormone (ADH). If this occurs the posterior pituitary takes over (enlarged at upper right), but the convoluted tubules of the kidneys (enlarged at centre left) are unable to cope with the decreased levels of ADH (yellow). Thus abnormal quantities of dilute urine is formed, which leads to dehydration.
