Lanercost was founded in the 12th century, built mainly of stone taken from nearby Hadrian's Wall. It fell into ruin after the roofs were removed from the monastic buildings following the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century. Lanercost Priory. 1169 is the year generally accepted as being when Robert de Vaux founded this Augustinian Priory in memory of his father Hubert de Vaux who died in 1164.
