From this brief glance at the great Nurem-berg artist, we must turn now to his North-ern contemporary, Lucas van Leyden, like-wise a painter-engraver, and a solitary figurein the Netherlands at that period. Bred inthe realistic maxims of the fifteenth century,his Northern origin asserts itself in the care-ful detail and truthful presentation of na-ture, in the characteristic types of his rendering of natural facts — as hasbeen mentioned before — is a quality com-mon to Northern artists.
