Explosion in Guillaume Rouelle's laboratory, historical artwork. French chemist Guillaume Francois Rouelle (1703-1770), giving a lecture. He has accidentally caused an explosion by mixing nitric acid and turpentine. In 1742 Rouelle was appointed Experimental Demonstrator of Chemistry at the Jardin du Roi, Paris, France. He introduced the modern definition of salts, as the compounds formed by the union of acids and bases. He also distinguished between neutral, acid and basic salts.
