The Craw Stane Class I Pictish symbol stone, Rhynie, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, UK, looking NNW to Tap o' Noth Iron Age hillfort (rear L).
The Craw Stane Class I Pictish symbol stone, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, UK, looking NNW to Tap o' Noth Iron Age hillfort (rear L). The stone is decorated with an incised fish (top) & elelphant beast symbol. Excavations on the site in 2011 discovered that this stone & two others were associated with a C6th-7thAD high status settlement comprising four lines of defences & a rectangular timber hall inside a ring ditch. There were exceptional finds of imported Mediterranean amphorae, fancy metalwork & glass similar to those at Tintagel & other top Dark Age sites in the west of Britain. There are also similarities to Anglian royal sites such as Yeavering, Northumberland, which is overlooked by an Iron Age hillfort of Yeavering Bell. Tap o' Noth is a vitrified fort situated at 563m OD.
