Medal of Honour for George, a Slave at the Leasowes Plantation. A slave uprising broke out in the Surinamese district of Nickerie in 1836. George, a plantation slave, provided the colonial authorities with crucial information allowing them to prosecute the insurgents. His betrayal was rewarded with this medal. The leader of the revolt, Colin,was sentenced to death. His followers were flogged before an audience of slaves and subsequently subjected to hard labour in chains.
