Blackpool, Lancashire. 13th February 2019. A swarm of tens of thousands of starlings gather to roost under Blackpool’s Victorian north pier. These amazing birds put on a stunning flight display at one of only a handful of their favourite sites throughout the UK. On calm days, the huge flocks of mumurating starlings whose numbers are estimated at 100,000 plus take respite on the shoreline before going to roost. Domestic flocks are joined at this time of year by migrant birds from the continent of Europe seeking shelter from the cold and warmer climes. Credit: MediaWorld Images/Alamy Live New
huge flock of thousands of starlings, which looks a bit like a giant swarm. They swirl through the skies together just before swooping down and settling into their roost for the night. Grouping together offers safety in numbers – predators such as peregrine falcons find it hard to target one bird in the middle of a hypnotising flock of thousands. They also gather to keep warm at night and to exchange information, such as good feeding areas.
