The base of this portionof the wall, enclosing the Mosque of Omar, and the site of theancient temple, consists of five tiers of massive, accurately-bevelledblocks. It is impossible to resist the impression at first view, not-withstanding the prophecy, that this is a portion of the wall ofthe Temple of Solomon, which was hewn in the quarries and setup in its place without the noise of the hammer and the axe.
