The Military Sweepstakes was won by Captain Harford, riding his own bay mare, Protectress; and he also rode the winner of the Guards' Cup, this horse being Tinderbox, belonging to Captain the Hon. C. White. Pleasant weather on the Tuesday compensated the visitors to Windsor for the misery they had been forced to endure on the opening day of the meeting. The match between Balder and Tommy Dodd resulted in the latter coming in first; but on returning to scale Captain James, owner and rider of Tommy, could not draw his weight, having lost his saddle-cloths. The winner was therefore Mr. Case's Balder. The Guide was made a strong favourite for the Open Handicap, but fell early in the race. This race was won by Mr. C. Guy's Hippolite. The Handicap Steeplechase, which affords a subject for our Illustration, was won by Mr. Moore's Hawkshaw. There were one or two awkward falls'. From "Illustrated London News", 1869.
